Plot summary
Ralph is twelve in 1987 when his parents give him a VHS camcorder for Christmas. He uses it to film explorations of his neighborhood, to make music videos alongside his best friend, and to record late-night television, wanting to see what airs after he goes to bed. The tape he has chosen is not blank: it is his parents' wedding video, and everything he shoots lands over it. Much of the material is a parody of 1980s late-night television, from infomercials to public access to a strange talk show where a woman theorizes that growing use of VHS cameras will change how people perceive reality. Snippets of the wedding play against vignettes Ralph captures that document his parents' marriage coming apart.
