Plot summary
A last summer in New York gives Lilly and Gerri, friends since school, the chance to carry out a plan they have made together: to lose their virginity before college begins. On a trip to Brighton Beach they meet David, a young man selling ice cream, and both are drawn to him. Lilly keeps his interest in her from Gerri, who has feelings of her own for him. At home, Lilly has just seen her father with another woman, and she escapes into Gerri's loud, open family while her own mother stays cold and her father is gone from the house. She spends her days guiding boat tours in Manhattan, where her boss flirts and dangles night shifts.
