Plot summary
In the early 1980s, Julie Richman lives in Encino, California, with her parents, Diana and Steve. She goes to the mall with Stacey, Karen and Loryn and is dating Mickey, a popular jock, though she has begun to doubt the life around her. Her own plan is to study fashion in New York, not stay in California as her family and friends assume. At the beach she notices Randy, a punk from Hollywood and the lead singer of Safety Recall, and they flirt before she hurries away. That night, at a costume party in Mickey's house, Randy arrives with Sticky and Jack, his bandmates, and the three are thrown out. Randy then insists Julie leave with him, and with a reluctant Stacey along, the group heads to a punk club where Safety Recall are to play.
