Plot summary
During the summer of 1944 the Soviet troops push forward, yet the German air force is still strong. Mikhail Devyatayev, a pilot with the 1st Ukrainian Front, is shot down on a sortie and captured by the Wehrmacht. In custody he is given a choice between dying in a camp and flying again for the Germans. He looks for a third way out. That way runs through Usedom, the heavily guarded island base in the southern Baltic where prisoners build the V-2 rocket. It is the most secret of the Nazi prisons, and the rocket built there is the weapon the Germans count on to change the war's outcome.

- The film is based on Soviet fighter pilot Mikhail Devyatayev, who escaped the Nazis' most secret prison on Usedom island, flying out with advanced designs for Hitler's V-2 ballistic missiles and coordinates, and returned to the Soviet Union weighing only 36 kilograms.
- The aerial battles were shot using technology from the online military simulator video game War Thunder; its maker, Gaijin Entertainment, became a liaison to the production crew, which chose virtual photography, and director Timur Bekmambetov had long wanted gamer-pilot cinematography.
- The pre-war Soviet song Lubimiy Gorod (Favorite City) gets a modern rerecording in the film by Till Lindemann of Rammstein, who heard it as a child in Rostock, East Germany, and it was his idea to include it.
