Plot summary
Barge 752 is a fishing boat that has carried food into blockaded Leningrad along the route known as the Road of Life. In September 1941 it is worn out, and it is used instead to take the city's people away across Lake Ladoga. Nikolai Gorelov takes responsibility for loading more than a thousand of them aboard, among them his son Kostya, a cadet-gunner, and Kostya's girlfriend Nastya Tkachyova. Also aboard is Vadim Petruchik, an NKVD investigator who had handled the case against Nastya's father. That case has since been reviewed; the father was freed and posted to the front, the same sector the barge is bound for.
