Plot summary
The story comes from the real events around the pilot Aleksey Maresyev, who flew in World War II, the conflict Russia remembers as the Great Patriotic War. The setting is December 1941 on the Northwestern Front, where a German tank column is advancing toward Moscow. Nikolai Komlev takes off in an IL-2 to stop that advance, and his aircraft is hit. He sets the plane down in a forest clearing, wounded and far from any friendly forces. What lies ahead is a trial of body and mind: hunger and severe cold, wolf packs, and Nazi detachments in the forest around him.
