Plot summary
At the Kalka River, young Evpaty is left for dead by a band of Mongols. Nastya, whom he later marries, names him Kolovrat for the way he spins two swords in a circle. By 1236 he serves as a knight under Prince Yuri of Ryazan. The Mongol horde under Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, holds most of the known world and moves toward Europe, reaching Ryazan the next year. Prince Fedor leads a party of envoys, Evpaty among them, to treat with the Khan, who admires the knight's nerve and gives him a talisman granting its bearer safe passage through the Mongol lines.

- The score was written by Serj Tankian, leader of the band System of a Down, and it was his first work in Russian cinema. He recorded it with folk instrumentalists, Tuvan throat-singing masters, a symphony orchestra and choir; the soundtrack uses electric guitars but not a single piano note.
- Furious is based on the legend of the bogatyr Evpaty Kolovrat as recorded in the 16th-century Tale of the Destruction of Ryazan, which is one of the best sources of the Mongol invasion of Russia.
- Principal photography took place in Moscow in a specially constructed pavilion at the ZiL plant, where the largest chromakey pavilions in Europe were erected, covering more than 4,000 square metres, with a hall for training actors and stuntmen, a riding arena and a stable in neighbouring pavilions.
