Plot summary
The first Soviet bombing raid on Berlin, ordered after Nazi Germany's assault on the USSR in 1941, must be launched from an airfield on Saaremaa, an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea. Colonel Yevgeniy Preobrazhenskiy leads the crews of the Baltic Fleet Air Force's 1st Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment. Their route runs 1,765 kilometers, 1,400 of them over the sea, with no refueling, and the flight takes seven hours. Against enemy air defenses the only protection is the maximum altitude of 7,000 meters, where the temperature falls to minus 35 or 40 degrees, cockpit glass and headset goggles freeze, and oxygen masks are worn the whole way.
