Plot summary
The battles near the town of Rzhev in the winter of 1942 and 1943 came to be called the Rzhev Meat Grinder. A Red Army company fights for months and takes the village of Ovsyannikovo, but so many of its soldiers are lost that only a third of the company is left. The survivors are exhausted and wait for reinforcements. Headquarters orders them to hold the village whatever happens. The company commander, Evgeny Ilyitch, faces a choice: keep his remaining men in the line of mortar fire and obey, or pull them back and face a tribunal.

- The film was to be shot near Rzhev, in Ovsyannikovo, but because there was no housing in the area production moved to the Rzhevsky training ground near St Petersburg, where a village was built: houses were dismantled in abandoned Tver villages and transported there to recreate an authentic look.
- The filmmakers decided not to depart from realism, so no special effects were used at all in the film's battle scenes.
