Plot summary
Near the end of the Soviet-Afghan War, in 1988, the Soviet Union begins its withdrawal from Afghanistan. The soldiers of the 108th Motor Rifle Division are waiting their turn to go home when word arrives that Alexander, a pilot and the son of General Vasilyev, has been kidnapped by the mujahideen after his airplane crashed. His capture puts the division's long awaited departure on hold, and the soldiers receive one last assignment: bring the general's son back. Their route runs through the Salang Pass, where the unit fights its way along the road home and faces the hardship of the war.
