Plot summary
Four adventurers descend in a diving bell to unexplored ocean depths. A technical problem snaps the cable to the surface and contact is lost; the expedition above believes them dead. The crew put on scuba gear and leave the bell, surfacing in a cavern instead of the sea. They find a skeleton and then Matheny, a ragged old sailor. He says he was shipwrecked fourteen years earlier with another sailor and has lived in the caves since. A volcano supplies the air, he says, and there is no way out.
