Plot summary
Four al-Qaeda members pray at a hotel in Newark, New Jersey, on the morning of September 11, 2001, and then board United Airlines Flight 93 for San Francisco. The cabin crew includes flight attendants Deborah Welsh, Sandra Bradshaw and CeeCee Lyles; Captain Jason Dahl and First Officer LeRoy Homer are in the cockpit, and the passengers include Todd Beamer, Tom Burnett, Mark Bingham, Jeremy Glick and Lauren Grandcolas. Heavy traffic delays the departure by half an hour. Controllers lose radio contact with American Airlines Flight 11 and work out that it has been hijacked; that plane hits the World Trade Center's North Tower, and United Airlines Flight 175 is taken soon after. At cruising altitude, as breakfast is served, the four men seize the plane.

- Director Paul Greengrass housed and fed the passenger and crew actors separately from the hijacker actors to build real antagonism between them. Several actors were genuinely hurt filming the revolt scene, and Jamie Harding, who played hijacker Ahmed al-Nami, broke down sobbing after his first take.

- Because some viewers were startled or upset by the trailer's subject matter, there were public calls for Universal to pull it from cinemas entirely; the studio refused, though one Manhattan theater voluntarily stopped showing the trailer after complaints.
- Lewis Alsamari, the Iraqi-born, London-based actor who played hijacker Saeed al-Ghamdi, said US immigration officials denied him a visa to attend the New York premiere even though he had been granted UK asylum in the 1990s, citing his past conscription into the Iraqi Army, the very thing that had made him a refugee after he deserted in 1993.
