Plot summary
Julian Assange is a hacker in Australia who works under the handle Mendax. Together with two friends he starts a group called the International Subversives. Their tools are the early home computers of the day, and their targets are organizations that keep their business secret. The three describe their activity as white hat hacking: they look but they do not steal. The intrusions come to the notice of the United States government, which views the group as a major threat to national security. The FBI urges the Australian Federal Police to act, and a special taskforce is created to catch the hackers. Its officers have little grounding in computer crime, so their first task is working out where to begin.
