Plot summary
Sam is 33 and aimless in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, in the summer of 2011, and he follows conspiracy theories more closely than his overdue rent. He hears that the billionaire Jefferson Sevence has vanished. Sarah, a neighbor, asks him to come over for a movie, but her roommates interrupt, and she tells him to return the next day. Before that, Sam goes after the boys he finds vandalizing his car. In the morning Sarah and the roommates are gone, and a symbol has been painted inside their apartment. Sam follows a stranger from his building to a party on a rooftop in Downtown Los Angeles, where the band Jesus & the Brides of Dracula performs and a Balloon Girl is there. He leaves with a cookie that is his ticket to the band's private show.

- Under the Silver Lake gained a cult following of viewers convinced the film hides meta-clues and ciphers, down to graffiti in toilets and on walls coded with the Copiale cipher. Its cryptography consultant was computer scientist Kevin Knight, who in 2011 co-created a program to translate that cipher.
- Dakota Johnson was announced to star alongside Andrew Garfield in David Robert Mitchell's film in May 2016, but in October 2016 Riley Keough replaced her, with Topher Grace also joining the cast.
