Plot summary
Beth Bledsoe grows up in Creekville, South Carolina, and in 1973 she leaves for college in New York City. Her uncle Frank Bledsoe teaches at a college in the city, and she feels closer to him than to her other relatives; years earlier he told her to be herself whatever others thought. Frank is gay and has lived with Walid, whom he calls Wally, for more than ten years, a truth he has kept from his relatives back home. When Beth's grandfather Daddy Mac dies of a heart attack, Frank agrees to drive her down to South Carolina for the funeral. Wally follows them, and Frank lets him come but asks him to stay in a motel while the services are held.
