Plot summary

Salvatore Vaccagnino, a lawyer in the Sicilian town of Maddà, is traveling home from a work trip to Rome when he comes across a women's magazine and its advice page. A married woman writes to Father Lucchesini about an infidelity she has committed and her fear of confessing it to her husband, and the priest advises her to stay silent until he has thought the matter over. At the city council club, Vaccagnino reads the letter to his peers, concluding that every married man there is a potential cuckold. He clears himself by noting that the woman writes of seeing her lover go to the bank, while from his house only the sea is visible. The other members, their reputations hurt, follow the postman to find who subscribes to the magazine.
