Plot summary
In a future where the world has exhausted its resources, scientists introduce genetically modified orchids as a new energy source and a surgical procedure that improves appearance and fitness to prevent prejudice. The operation is given at sixteen, after which Uglies go to the city as Pretties. Tally and Peris, her best friend, are Uglies. Peris is three months older and leaves for his surgery first. They share scars on their hands and promise to keep them and meet again. Tally sneaks into the city to see him and finds the scar gone. Wardens chase her back to the dormitories. She befriends Shay, who rejects the surgery and describes the Smoke, a land of freedom in nature with its leader David. On her sixteenth birthday, her procedure is withheld until she reveals where Shay went.
