Plot summary
It is 1939, and Thomas and William Norton are brothers on the road as swaggies, bound from Broken Hill for Melbourne, where they plan to begin an angora fur trade. A traveler they meet, Bertie, makes off with the money they have saved. Rather than chase him, the brothers stop to help a sick man they find, Mr. Carmody, and see him as far as the next town. That town is Riverton, and the Carmody family welcomes them. Alice Carmody takes a liking to William, and the brothers find work at a sheep station, where William befriends a fellow worker, Jack Humphries. Thomas, though, is impatient to be moving on.
