Plot summary

Shunka Wakan, an Englishman the Sioux call Man Called Horse, is their chief and is now in his sixties. White men hate him for the tricks he taught the tribe, and the government summons him to peace talks. His son Koda was raised among the Sioux but sent away to school in the East, and he returns to find white settlers taking tribal land. The warriors of the tribe want to go to war. Koda has to deal with both the settlers and his own people, and he meets Redwing, a young Crow woman, and the Crow are the traditional enemies of the Sioux.
