Plot summary
Trappers with government backing force the Yellow Hands Sioux off the sacred ground the band holds, and the people withdraw, waiting for supernatural punishment to fall on the men who took it. John Morgan, the eighth Earl of Kildare, lived among the Yellow Hand for years and is known to them as Horse. English life holds nothing for him, and he longs for the West and the band he left, so he leaves his fiancée and his estate and returns to America. There he learns that the traders and their Indian allies have largely massacred the tribe or put its people into slavery, and that the survivors are dispirited.
