Plot summary
Britain is divided among rival clans after the fall of Rome, while Ireland dominates the British tribes. The British lord Marke calls the chiefs together to unite them, and the Irish king Donnchadh attacks the meeting. Marke's wife and the parents of the boy Tristan die, and Marke loses a hand saving Tristan, whom he then raises as a son. Years later, in a raid, Tristan kills the Irish commander Morholt, his father's killer, and is wounded by Morholt's poisoned sword. Believed dead, he is placed on a funeral boat that carries him to Ireland. There the princess Isolde hides him and heals his wounds, giving her name as that of her maid, Bragnae, and keeping her rank secret. The two fall in love, and Tristan returns home.
