Plot summary
In 1969, the 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, gives a platoon five replacements: Beletsky, "Alphabet" Languilli, Washburn, Bienstock and Galvan. Sergeant First Class Worcester, the platoon sergeant, is training Lieutenant Eden to lead, and the new men join 3rd Squad under Staff Sergeant Frantz. Duffy and Gaigin make up the machine gun team, while Motown, "Doc" Johnson and Sergeant McDaniel are among the platoon's veterans. An airlift carries the platoon into the A Sầu Valley to assault Hill 937, a ridge fortified by North Vietnamese Army troops. The high ground is soon nicknamed Hamburger Hill, and the platoon finds that taking it requires repeated attacks against entrenched positions.
