Plot summary
Years after the Graboid attack on Perfection, Earl Bassett has spent his money on an ostrich ranch that is failing. Carlos Ortega comes to him with news that Graboids are killing his workers at an oil field in Chiapas, Mexico, and offers to hire him as a hunter. Earl turns him down until Ortega's taxi driver, Grady Hoover, points out the payment of $50,000 for each creature killed. The two of them join the hunt. At the field, Earl hears that the company will pay double to take one alive, and meets Kate Reilly, a geologist studying the creatures with her assistant Julio and the mechanic Pedro.

- Tremors 2 was first planned to be filmed in Australia on a $17 million budget with both Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire returning, but McEntire declined because of a major tour and Bacon turned it down to make Apollo 13.
- When Tremors 2 was nearly canceled over its cost, several actors and effects artists offered to cut their rates or work for free to get it made, including S. S. Wilson, who offered to direct it for free to save money on hiring another director.
- Tremors 2 was moved to MCA/Universal's home video division on a $4 million budget. The same script was used but effects sequences were scrapped, including one where Burt Gummer commandeers a tank and another where characters fight the monsters with American Civil War muskets.
- The full-scale articulated shrieker puppet required 16 puppeteers to operate, while the rubber shrieker dummies, needing none, were used in scenes when a shrieker had to be dropped, shot or exploded.
- For the shriekers' infrared view, actors wore red suits and yellow stockings, were shot on Hi-8 video tape and blown up to 35mm film to add grain, and had their faces and bodies rendered in different colors by post-production engineers.
- The baby shrieker was a full-size shrieker filmed in a large cage to make it look small, so no actors could be shown at the same time as the cage and shrieker.
