Jack Deth works as a trooper in Angel City, the name Los Angeles carries in the 23rd century. He is called back into service to track down Martin Whistler, a criminal who uses psychic power to leave his victims mindless and obedient, and who has been thought dead. Whistler escapes into the past by drug, his consciousness sliding down his ancestral line to take over a body in 1985 Los Angeles, where he lands inside a police detective named Weisling. Deth follows the same route and wakes in the body of his own ancestor, Phil Dethton, a journalist. Leena, the punk rock girl Phil had taken out the night before, helps him.
