Plot summary

Hubert Fiorentini works as a commissaire for the French police, and his methods are violent and unorthodox. In a nightclub he strikes a drag queen, drags her out in handcuffs and assaults the patrons who come to free her, one of them the chief's son, and he is put on paid leave. He has never forgotten Miko, a spy he met in Japan nineteen years earlier. News of her death summons him to Japan, where her lawyer, Ishibashi, reads her will and tells him he has inherited guardianship of Yumi, an eccentric teenager, for the two days remaining before she reaches adulthood. Yumi believes she is the result of her mother's rape and abandonment and hates the father she has never met.
