Plot summary
Stéphane Miroux is a shy young man from Mexico whose dreams are vivid enough to intrude on his waking hours. After his divorced father dies, he moves to Paris to be near his mother Christine, settling into his childhood home. Christine has arranged work for him at a calendar printing company, which he expects to be creative; the work is typesetting instead, and his drawings of twelve invented disasters go unappreciated. His neighbor Stéphanie, an artist, invites him into her apartment, and the two plan a short animated film around a boat she is building. Stéphane grows enamored of her and shows her his inventions, while his dreams and his waking life become harder to tell apart.
