Plot summary

Clay Travis once was the fastest draw in the West; now he works a Kansas ranch with his wife Amelia and their children, Lily and Jake. Lily asks to go to a tie dance and Clay refuses. Jake is sent out to fetch honey and dies of a rattlesnake bite. After the funeral Amelia sinks into depression, and Lily leaves home to become a Harvey girl. Clay takes his guns and follows, carrying her photograph from town to town and questioning anyone who might have seen her. In Wichita a bartender named Billy tells him to find a man called Rig Marlowe, and the search carries him on toward Dodge City.
