Plot summary
George Lattimer works a Washington, D.C. beat where the suspects he arrests insult him and many Blacks take him for a sell-out, while his superiors pass him over for promotion. At home, his wife, Viola, wants him to talk with Valerie, their thirteen-year-old daughter, about the boys she has been seeing, and he dismisses the matter. His girlfriend, a nightclub singer, is high when he calls on her. His partner, Bobby Gelman, urges him to go along with how the department works, but George calls the sergeants' exam pointless. He gives himself over to daydreams in which he is an astronaut, one of an elite group chosen to walk on the moon.
