Plot summary
Silva, once a hired gun, rides across the desert to the small town where Jake is sheriff, the first time the two have met in 25 years. A resident brings Jake word that the man sought for the killing of Jake's brother's widow resembles Joe, her violent boyfriend. Jake is sworn to care for his brother's wife, and he means to make the arrest himself. Silva's arrival takes him by surprise. Over dinner the two men talk about the years when they were young, and Silva brings up a plan he once had for the two of them to run a ranch together.
