Plot summary
Tom Brown is energetic, stubborn, kind-hearted and athletic rather than intellectual, and he follows his own feelings and the codes his schoolmates keep ahead of the rules set by adults. In 1830s England he arrives at Rugby School, a school for boys, at the age of thirteen, and he gets to know the boys and the masters who live there. An older pupil, Harry "Scud" East, looks after him. The headmaster, Dr Thomas Arnold, calls off the school hunt and complains that in earlier days no masters stayed in the building at night to keep order among the boys. A bully named Flashman then turns on Tom and East.

- For Tom Brown's Schooldays, filming at Rugby School used real pupils: every non-lead pupil role went to a Rugby School student, and the school all but ground to a halt for a fortnight while the majority of its male pupils appeared as extras.
- To make Rugby School look historically accurate, the production built a convincing artificial well in the Old Quad where one had been demolished and bricked over; it stayed at the school for nearly a year because the crew left without it.
