Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet, Barry Pepper and Michael Sheen all worked on the film, but Terrence Malick cut every one of their performances, keeping no footage of them for the final cut.
  • When the film was announced in February 2010 it was set to co-star Christian Bale, but Bale dropped out of the production and Ben Affleck replaced him; Rachel McAdams also joined the cast.

  • Malick's shoot used no screenplay and no lights; actors were told to keep moving, and Olga Kurylenko said it felt more like a dance performance than acting, if she stopped, Malick poked her to keep going.
  • Malick handed his editing team works of literature for inspiration, including Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Walker Percy's The Moviegoer, and the phrase "radiant zigzag becoming" became their unofficial post-production motto.
