Plot summary
One day when they were children, Roger Dawson pushed Jake Taylor clear of a car and was left with a disability for life. The two grew up in San Diego and drifted apart: Jake joined the basketball team and its popular crowd alongside his girlfriend Amy Briggs, while Roger kept to himself. Roger dies by suicide, and Jake cannot stop asking himself whether a better friendship might have saved him. Chris Vaughn, a youth pastor who spoke at Roger's funeral, hands him a business card. After the last game of the season, with a party broken up by police, Jake calls the number and Chris drives him home.

- Writer Jim Britts, a Southern California youth pastor, built the script for To Save a Life out of real stories of struggling teenagers that he and his schoolteacher wife had gathered from years of counseling.
- Director Brian Baugh was surprised by how gritty the script was for a Christian film and deliberately kept in scenes of teen drinking, marijuana use, self-harm cutting and profanity to make the story feel realistic.
- Lead actor Randy Wayne initially turned down To Save a Life because of its low budget, but eventually changed his mind and offered to play the role for free.
