Plot summary
Mareta Percival teaches at a primary school in the Christchurch suburb of Aranui. Her daughter is killed in the 2011 earthquake while auditioning at the CTV Building, and grief drains Mareta's sense of purpose. In 2014 her nephew Sio, a social worker, urges her to apply for a substitute post at St Francis School, a conservative private school, to keep her unemployment benefit, and retiring headmaster Alan Hubbard persuades the board to hire her. When deputy principal Peter Wadsworth presses a student, Sophie, to specialize in an instrument, Mareta covers for her, saying they had discussed vocal scholarships. St Francis has no choir, so Mareta wins Alan's approval to start one, to Peter's displeasure, and enlists Helen, a St Francis alumna and an accomplished chorister. Sophie, Anthony Bull, Mei-Ling and Luke are among the students who join.
