Biography

Anthony Dexter was an American actor whose strong resemblance to Rudolph Valentino shaped much of his career. Born Walter Reinhold Alfred Fleischmann in Nebraska, he attended St. Olaf College on an athletic scholarship and later took a master's degree at the University of Iowa. After serving in the Army during World War II, he acted on Broadway in The Three Sisters, Ah, Wilderness and The Barretts of Wimpole Street. Producer Edward Small picked him from a vast pool of applicants to play Valentino in the 1951 biopic Valentino, and the likeness won him a Columbia Pictures contract while also limiting him to similar parts. He often played real historical figures, among them Captain John Smith, Billy the Kid and Christopher Columbus, and in 1960 he guest starred on the Western series Bat Masterson. He later taught English, speech and drama at a Los Angeles high school and died in 2001.
