Plot summary
A cataclysmic event has stripped the Earth of technology and power. Sam is in her late teens and reads constantly; she lives in seclusion with the two women who raise her. Connie is her strict mother, convinced that only the strong survive, while Willow, a friend of the household, takes an optimistic view. When Willow is badly injured, Sam has to leave the sheltered home for the first time and travel several days to a settlement for medical supplies. On the road she meets Dart, a young man on a walkabout who wants to prove his worth to his community.
