Plot summary
Chris McCandless earns top honors at Emory University but grows disenchanted with modern society. He gets rid of his credit cards and identification, hands his $24,000 in savings to Oxfam, and drives off in his Datsun 210 without telling his parents or his sister Carine where he is headed. A flash flood at Lake Mead catches the car, so he leaves it and starts hitchhiking. He burns the rest of his cash and calls himself Alexander Supertramp. He meets Jan and Rainey, a hippie couple whose relationship he helps mend. In South Dakota he works for Wayne Westerberg, a contractor. He paddles a kayak down the Colorado River into Mexico, then rides freight trains. Then he heads for Alaska, where he plans to live in the wilderness.

The abandoned bus on the Stampede Trail where McCandless died, 30 miles from the nearest town, became a pilgrimage destination for fans; visitors had to cross the dangerous Teklanika River, and in 2010 a Swiss woman drowned.- On June 18, 2020 the bus was removed over public safety concerns, air-lifted out by a US Army Chinook helicopter to an undisclosed location, and later taken to the Museum of The North at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for a permanent exhibit.
- Eddie Vedder said he spent three days giving Sean Penn "colors that I could paint with" - pump organ and vocal, or an uptempo song - around 25 minutes of music in all, and really didn't think anything was going to come out of it.

Rather than shoot at the real bus, the crew filmed the Alaska wilderness scenes 50 miles south of where Christopher McCandless actually died, in the town of Cantwell, because the real location was too remote for a film shoot.- Brian Dierker, who plays Rainey in a major supporting role, had never acted before; he originally joined the production just to serve as the rafting guide for those scenes.
