Plot summary
As apartheid takes hold in 1950s Cape Town, Amina runs the Location Café, a place open to all, and answers to no one, ignoring the disapproval of the police and of the Indian community around her. Racial law bars her business partner Jacob from owning a business, and it also stands between him and Madeleine, a white postmistress he is drawn to. Miriam, married to Omar, raises their three children and makes no demands of her own life. When Omar's sister Rehmat, who married a white man against the rules, needs protection from the police, and Amina gives her shelter.
