A role that slipped away
Ray declined several roles before her Indian film debut in 2001, the Hindi film Kasoor, opposite Aftab Shivdasani. Divya Dutta dubbed her voice in it since she could not speak Hindi.
Big break
While still a student at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, Ray got a call from Deepa Mehta offering her the lead role of Kalyani in Water, an offer she could not refuse.
First role
Ray was discovered while on a family vacation in India as a teenager, which started her modeling career. She first gained public attention from a Bombay Dyeing advertisement in a black swimsuit opposite Karan Kapoor.
Beyond film
Ray took the stage in the 2011 play Taj, appearing opposite Kabir Bedi at Luminato Festival. Canadian playwright John Murrell wrote it, blending poetry, music, theater and the Indian classical dance form kathak.
A change of course
In 2011, Ray took on hosting duties for a travel show on Discovery Channel India. That same year she was also a host and judge on Top Chef Canada, which Food Network rated its highest show.
