Plot summary
Sent in 1925 to the east coast town of Crythin Gifford, London solicitor Arthur Kidd must attend the funeral of Alice Drablow, a reclusive widow who was a client of his firm, and settle her estate. There he meets Sam Toovey, a local landowner, and finds the townspeople unwilling to speak about Drablow's home, Eel Marsh House. At the funeral Kidd notices a mourner dressed in black; when he mentions her to Pepperell, the local solicitor, the man becomes frightened. In the village Kidd rescues a Romani child from a runaway load of timber. A coachman drives him to Eel Marsh House, which can be reached only by a causeway that appears at low tide.

- A distribution dispute between Central Television and three of the film's original production team kept the film off television after 1994 and off home media after 1991. The rights fight grew more complicated when the 2012 Hammer film version went into production.
- The TV adaptation stayed fairly faithful to Susan Hill's novel, but some changes angered Hill. Among them, the dog Spider was changed from female to male, and Arthur Kipps was renamed Arthur Kidd.
