Plot summary
On the Fourth of July, Helen Shivers wins a beauty pageant in her coastal town and celebrates with Julie James, Ray Bronson and Barry Cox. Driving back from the beach late that night, with Barry drunk and Ray at the wheel, the car strikes a man on the road. Believing they have killed him, the four drag the body to the water and push it in, then make a pact to keep the accident to themselves. A year passes. Julie comes back to town for the summer, the friends have drifted apart, and a note reaches her: I know what you did last summer. Julie and Helen bring the note to Barry, who thinks it is a joke.

- Columbia Pictures and Mandalay Entertainment marketed the film as being "From the creator of Scream", meaning writer Kevin Williamson. Miramax Films sued them, arguing the line was misleading because it suggested that Wes Craven, the director of Scream, had been involved with the production.
- The climactic scene where Jennifer Love Hewitt's character walks into the middle of the street and screams to the killer "What are you waiting for?!" was, according to Hewitt, conceived and directed by a child who won a contest to create a moment for the movie.
- Inspired by his father, who had been a commercial fisherman, screenwriter Williamson changed the setting of the novel to a small fishing village and made the villain a hook-wielding fisherman.
- Lois Duncan, the author of the original novel, heavily criticized the adaptation, stating in a 2002 interview that she was "appalled" her story had been turned into a slasher film.

After test screenings, Gillespie and the producers decided a death needed to come earlier to establish a sense of legitimate danger, so the scene in which Max is murdered in the crab factory was filmed and added to the final cut. In the original script his character was not killed.SPOILER
The scene in which Elsa has her throat slashed against a glass door was first shot from behind with no blood on the glass, but producer Feig worried it appeared "medically impossible", so Gillespie re-shot it with a visual effect of blood spattering across the glass.- Melissa Joan Hart was offered a role in the film, but she turned it down because she felt that the film was a rip-off of Scream.
