Plot summary
Muffy St. John, a Vassar student and cousin of Skip, prepares the family island mansion while her guests joke on the pier and wait for the ferry. While she works, she comes across an old jack-in-the-box and remembers the toy from a birthday party in her childhood. During the crossing the friends' antics grow boisterous, and Buck, a local deckhand, is seriously injured in an accident. On the island, Muffy's gags begin: dribble glasses, exploding cigars, a whoopee cushion, a tape of a crying baby in Nan's room, and heroin paraphernalia left in Arch's wardrobe. The guests try to relax. Then Skip goes missing.

Fred Walton's original cut carried on past the ending audiences saw: the group left the island and Skip then committed a real murder of Muffy, to take the family inheritance for himself. Paramount executives disliked the dark turn and ordered the sequence cut so the film could end on the celebration.
