Plot summary
Robby is stood up at the altar by Linda, who decides that the prospect of marrying a guy who sings at wedding receptions doesn't equal the attraction she felt when he was lead singer in a rock band. Robby finds consolation in his friendship with Julia, a waitress at the wedding receptions and bar mitzvahs where he performs. Julia asks Robby to help her plan her upcoming wedding to Glenn, who isn't interested in the details of the ceremony. Robby learns that Glenn also isn't totally interested in Julia and is marrying her because she "deserves it" after sticking with him for years and because he knows she's not marrying him for his money, since she dated him back before he started pulling down the big bucks.

- Carrie Fisher, a frequent script doctor, was brought on to make the female part more balanced, while Judd Apatow and Sandler performed further uncredited rewrites of the script.

- Sandler would often make Barrymore laugh out of context during shooting, so that even after a long day her laughs on camera would be real; she also would not read or hear the songs until the first shoot, so that her reactions would be more spontaneous.
- Adam Sandler had an idea for a comedy about a wedding singer who gets left at the altar and suggested it to Tim Herlihy, who decided to set the film in the 1980s after being inspired by the radio show "Lost in the '80s".

In the stage musical the airplane scene with Billy Idol was replaced by a Las Vegas scene where Robbie meets a Billy Idol impersonator, and they and other impersonators including Ronald Reagan, Cyndi Lauper and Imelda Marcos come to convince Julia to give up Glenn.- The stage version ran on Broadway for only 284 performances, but it has since become a popular show among community theaters and high schools.
