Big break
After Al Franken and Tom Davis, producers at the time, watched Smigel in a Chicago sketch show, they brought him aboard as a writer for Saturday Night Live.
Early training
Smigel studied improvisation at The Players Workshop in Chicago with teacher Josephine Forsberg, where fellow student Bob Odenkirk was in his class.
A first
Robert Smigel was Late Night with Conan O'Brien's first head writer. The comedy bits he created there included one in which he supplied only the lips of public figures, superimposed on photos of the actual people.
A first
Smigel wrote for and appeared on ABC's primetime sketch program The Dana Carvey Show, which had a short run in 1996. Even though it ended early, the show let him introduce his first cartoon, The Ambiguously Gay Duo.
A first
In February 1997, Smigel introduced Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a puppet that mocks celebrities like a Borscht Belt comedian, on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the character went on appearing there and elsewhere for years.
A first
Smigel wrote the script for You Don't Mess with the Zohan with Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow, and he played Yosi, an Israeli electronics salesman. He is also one of the film's executive producers, which is a first for him.
