Plot summary
Carol, a young European woman, is overtaken by the spirit of Ayesha and pulled toward Kuma, a remote city where she is destined to reign. Men-Hari, a member of the Magi, wants her brought to Kallikrates before a sacred flame is lit during a rare alignment; if he succeeds, he will be allowed to enter the flame, become immortal, and gain mental power strong enough to rule the world. He compels Carol to travel. Za-Tor, Men-Hari's father and leader of the Magi, opposes the plan. Phillip, a psychiatrist, meets Carol along the way, falls in love with her, and also stands against Men-Hari.
