John Richardson
Biography
John Richardson was an English actor whose film career stretched from the late 1950s into the early 1990s. Born in Worthing, he began acting with a local amateur theater group and then worked in British repertory. After a two-year contract with 20th Century Fox yielded little, he had small roles for Rank before his first notable part in Mario Bava's Italian gothic horror Black Sunday (1960), playing opposite Barbara Steele. He stayed in Italy for Pirates of Tortuga (1961), then returned to Britain for minor films. His breakthrough came as the male lead in She (1965), a hit, and he was the only actor to return for its sequel, The Vengeance of She (1968). He supported Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C. (1966), another success, and later appeared in spaghetti Westerns, a part in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970), and Italian giallo films such as Torso (1973).

A role that slipped away
In the late 1960s, John Richardson was in the running to play James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), the film made once Sean Connery first departed the franchise, but George Lazenby got the part instead.
Big break
Ray Stark noticed Richardson at the offices of Seven Arts Productions, which led to his big break: Stark gave him the male lead in She (1965), a film the company was co-producing with Hammer Films.
A first
In The Vengeance of She (1968), the sequel to She, Richardson was the sole actor to return to his part, but the film flopped.
