Plot summary
Thom Johnson studies engineering at Cambridge, where oil company recruiters compete to hire him. He turns them down and gets an anonymous message telling him to meet at a club, where Lorraine introduces him to Walter. Walter's salvage company once recovered a fortune called the treasure of Guadalupe, but Spanish authorities seized it because his operation was not legal. His crew includes Lorraine, a con artist, Simón, who handles logistics, Klaus, who works with computers, and James, a treasure hunter who has partnered with Walter before. They need Thom's engineering talent to get past the security of the Bank of Spain. He agrees and joins them in Madrid while Spain contends for the 2010 World Cup. Crowd noise covers their scouting; the vault sits on a scale beneath a reservoir, where any shift in weight floods it.
