Plot summary
While on vacation with her boyfriend Jeff Harriman, Diane Shaver goes missing at a gas station. Jeff spends years hunting for answers, posting fliers and chasing leads. Worn out, he stops at a diner and a waitress, Rita Baker, listens to him. A year on, the two share an apartment in Seattle. Jeff is trying to write a novel, and a publisher tells him the disappearance could be his subject. He keeps the project from Rita, buys an old military uniform, and treats reserve drills as cover for his searching. Rita finds the draft on his computer, follows him to a motel, and demands the truth about how Diane went missing.
