Plot summary
Lucy's mother and father are estranged from her and neglect her. At eleven years old, she is sent to a children's home. The story is told through her eyes as she grows up in the UK care system. Coping with that system is hard for her. She holds on to her self-belief and to the certainty that the holy spirit watches over her and keeps her safe.

- Samantha Morton originally wanted to set The Unloved in 1989 but decided against it, so that audiences would not write it off as a historical piece.
- The Unloved was shot entirely in Morton's hometown of Nottingham, after she scouted Newcastle, Glasgow and around London but decided it was best to make a film about the world she knew and grew up in.
