Plot summary
In 1845, Mary Elnor is hanged and burned as a witch in Banfield, Massachusetts, and her ashes are sealed in a doll. In the present day, disgraced journalist Gerry Fenn comes to Boston to report on a hoax and accidentally breaks the doll, freeing Mary's spirit. He then sees Alice Pagett run across the road and hears her speak before she collapses. At a church he learns she is deaf and mute. The next day she speaks at church, saying the Virgin Mary cured her, and word spreads as other healings occur. A statue of the Virgin cries tears of blood, and the Catholic Church sends Monsignor Delgarde to investigate. As terrifying events surround the reported miracles, Gerry works with Father Hagan to uncover whether the phenomena are divine or something darker.

- Filming on The Unholy began in Boston but was suspended on March 14, 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. When it resumed, CDC rules allowing no more than 10 background actors on set at once forced director Evan Spiliotopoulos to use the same people in five different places.
- Jordana Brewster was announced as joining the cast of The Unholy in November 2019, but by February 2020 Katie Aselton had been cast in her place, joining the film alongside William Sadler, Cary Elwes and others.
