Plot summary
Kate Mandell takes a post as governess to seven-year-old Flora Fairchild at the Fairchild Estate, after the earlier tutor, Miss Jessel, vanishes. Before leaving, Kate visits her mother Darla, who has delusions and lives in a mental institution. At the estate, the caretaker Mrs. Grose says Flora saw her parents killed in a car crash and calls the girl a special case. Flora worries that Kate will leave her as Miss Jessel did, and Kate promises she will not. That night Kate meets Flora's brother Miles, home from boarding school. The next day the school's principal telephones to say that Miles has been expelled for strangling another boy. Kate begins to notice things in the house at night that she cannot explain.
